MOD Case Study: Building Dynamic Teams in a High-Pressure Operational Environment

In March 2026, Integrity QHSE delivered The Art of Building Dynamic Teams for the Northern Ireland Security Guard Service (NISGS) at Thiepval Barracks and Headquarters 38 (Irish), Joint Military Command, Northern Ireland. The workshop was designed as a practical leadership intervention for managers and leaders working in a pressured environment, with a focus on improving communication, confidence, accountability, conflict management, and team effectiveness.
The course covered six core subjects: having difficult conversations, managing conflict, a practitioner decision-making model, building dynamic teams, emotional intelligence, and leading through potential conflict. These themes were selected because they directly matched the leadership and organisational challenges raised by participants, including conflicting information, weak communication, low morale, resistance to change, limited support, and a need for stronger face-to-face leadership development.
Challenge
Participant feedback highlighted a set of linked issues affecting culture and performance. These included supervision pressures, inconsistent guidance, poor communication flows, cultural tension, weak accountability, recruitment pressures, and limited coaching and mentoring. The feedback suggested that leaders needed practical tools to address difficult issues early, make sound decisions under pressure, and create more resilient teams.
Approach
The workshop combined leadership theory with directly relevant operational themes. It focused on practical behaviours that help leaders manage conflict, conduct difficult conversations, make defensible decisions, and lead with greater emotional intelligence. Supporting content reinforced wider issues such as wellbeing, visibility, delegation, recognition, and team culture, giving the session broader organisational relevance.
Outcome
The course was assessed as timely, practical, and closely aligned to the reality of the participants’ working environment. It not only addressed immediate leadership needs but also identified a clear need for follow-on development in conflict resolution, accountability, coaching and mentoring, change management, time management, and succession planning. The report also set out a phased roadmap to stabilise culture, strengthen leadership capability, improve communication, build people capability, and embed ongoing evaluation.
Value
This case study demonstrates how a focused leadership intervention can help an organisation address cultural friction and operational pressure while building stronger leadership practice. It also shows the value of linking training to participant feedback and converting insight into a practical development roadmap. Integrity QHSE is positioned not just as a training provider, but as a partner in sustained organisational improvement
